Part of the nobility in pursuing passion-driven work is, I think, the chance that people will either not stumble across it, or they will not find value in it. Perhaps this is one difference between the artist and the laborer: the work of the laborer is obvious. The corollary is that, because the work of the laborer is a miracle hidden-in-plain-sight, it often goes underappreciated.
The pride is deserved because action is being taken, and it’d be way easier to just sit there and do nothing.
